Created from part of Baker County in 1857, Mitchell County is named in honor of General Henry Mitchell. General Mitchell presided over the Georgia senate for many years and was a leader in the movement for independence during the Revolutionary War. Camilla itself was named after Mitchell's granddaughter.
  
Compared to many parts of the country, Mitchell County's summer months are not significantly warmer but its winters are significantly milder. Average temperatures range from 38 degrees in the winter to 92 degrees in the summer.
